The film achieved significant critical praise and became the biggest Irish film at the box office in Ireland in 2016, taking in over €1.3 million. The film has won numerous awards, including an Irish Film and Television Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Peter Foott. The film was nominated for 7 awards in total at the IFTAs. Winner of the Best Irish Film at the prestigious Galway Film Fleadh in 2016, where The Young Offenders had its World Premiere, the film has screened at film festivals across the world to audience acclaim. It continues to be a popular Netflix selection internationally.
The success of The Young Offenders continued, with a television show being commissioned by the BBC in association with RTÉ. Since 2017 there have been four successful series created by Peter Foott, which has since been commissioned for a fifth series.
