Sectoral Development

Working with our members and key stakeholders, SPI shapes and future-proofs the independent production industry in Ireland. Sectoral development is a far-reaching area- unpinned by a philosophy of working with stakeholders to deliver on actions and implement initiatives that maintain stability and pave the way for future growth of the sector.

This work includes working to increase the accessibility of funding and diverse funding structures for production, engaging with Unions and representative bodies, negotiating terms of trade, engaging with Broadcasters and industry bodies and acting as a leading voice on industry representative bodies.

In addition to this work, we support creative entrepreneurs that drive our sector by providing resources and connections through networking, learning and development opportunities.

Our sectoral development work includes:

Industrial Relations

A stable industrial relations environment is critical to maintaining and evolving the sector. SPI works closely with the Film Group of Unions to develop the sector, including the negotiation of agreements. SPI also represents the industry at the European Commission Social Dialogue through our membership of CEPI.

Funding

Acting on behalf of our members, we work with funding bodies – such as RTÉ, TG4, BAI and Screen Ireland – to press for and oversee the implementation of adequate funding (including structures and scope) and commissioning requirements. SPI also negotiates and oversees over the Code of Fair Trading Practice with TG4 and RTÉ, on behalf of our producer members.

Training

SPI helps to develop industry skills and talent by collaborating with Screen Skills Ireland, Screen Skillnet and industry academies like the Creative Futures Academy and the National Talent Academy. Our focus is on developing training structures that reflect the unique context and needs of the industry.

Networking

We provide our members with a wealth of networking opportunities – both with fellow members and with others working in the creative screen sector – through introductions, events and involvement in initiatives, committees and oversight bodies.

Promotion/Stakeholder Engagement

SPI actively fosters close links with key industry stakeholders to promote indigenous creative expertise, including on-screen talent, crew, directors, writers and composers.

Resources

We support the creative entrepreneurship of our members by providing them with essential resources covering HR best practice and contracting. SPI members can also access training and webinars on issues such as operating union agreements, international co-production, Section 481 and commissioning opportunities.

Inclusion

SPI strives to build inclusion within our sector. We collaborate with key industry stakeholders to identify and implement interventions that improve representation, and we develop targeted programmes such as the SPI Bursary.

COVID-19 Guidelines

We have developed clear COVID-19 guidelines and work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that shooting can safely continue during the pandemic.
