Entertainment series for RTÉjr – young children and family audience

  • No. and Duration: 20 x half hours
  • Budget: To a maximum of €500,000
  • Transmission: Weekdays, Autumn '18

RTÉjr is a channel dedicated to children under 7. It hosts a full multi-genre offering for young children living in Ireland. Along with acquired programming, RTÉjr features a range of home-produced programmes which reflect their world and their voices. From observational documentary series - both urban and rural - to wildlife programmes made especially for very young viewers; from home-produced animation series to puppet entertainment series, RTÉjr aims to provide children with the spread and variety of programming you could expect to find on main channels.

Mindful of viewing habits in homes throughout the country RTÉjr has a 'co-viewing' slot in the early evenings on RTÉjr between 5pm and 7pm. Research shows that, with older siblings home from after-school activities and parents available to watch with them, programming which appeals to older children and family viewing - while still both appropriate and appealing to under 7s - works well at this time.

What  RTÉjr is looking for:

  • RTÉjr is seeking proposals for a family entertainment series which will feature and appeal to young children but with broader appeal for older siblings and families for transmission in the early evening co-viewing slot.
  • RTÉjr specifically interested in studio based talent/performance ideas which will see children dancing and singing. They are not looking for competition or a competitive dimension.
  • A combination of performance and game show would appeal – eg. Regular dance troupe along with which guest children could perform, featured child performers, putting parents/teachers/ older siblings on the spot to learn and perform at the end of the show, vt pranks on dance teachers/parents, sketch – a format which will combine featured excellent performers, big show numbers and entertainment based segments.
  • At the core of a such a series for RTÉjr is the celebration of great young performers, an opportunity to showcase young talent alongside the irreverence and fun of entertainment strands.
  • Producers can consider the possibility of stand-alone episodes or a series which sees challenges set and completed over two episodes.
  • Essentially RTÉjr is looking for proposals for a strong entertainment format which will engage and entertain young family audiences with children at the centre.

This callout is for 20 x half hour programmes for delivery by end August 2018.

Deadline for submission of proposals: Friday 19th January 2018 at noon
