Lifestyle Programmes

RTÉ Lifestyle Commissions into a number of slots across both channels. We commission Factual Entertainment, Features, Formats and Observational Documentary Series for both pre and post-watershed slots on RTÉ ONE and RTÉ2.

RTE Lifestyle is home of wide range of RTE’s most popular, high quality and impactful programmes. Recent and current commissions include: Operation Transformation, At Your Service, Room to Improve, The High Hopes Choir, The Unemployables, Connected, The Shelbourne and Don’t Tell the Bride.

We operate a rolling commissioning system as well as having specific call-outs for individual slots.

Rolling Round.

We are always looking for ideas that can be developed or commissioned for the following slots:

RTÉ ONE Mid-week and Sundays 20.30, half-hours, 6- 10 episodes (€40K – €55k per ep)

RTÉ ONE, Sundays 21.30, post-watershed, hour-long episodes 4 – 6 episodes (€80K - €95K per ep)

RTÉ2, Mid-week, post-watershed, series, hour long series (€ 55k to 80k per ep)*

RTE2, Reality Bites. Single, hour-long formats for RTE2 (€55,000 per episode).

BAI Proposals – Projects of scale that could play in one of the Lifestyle slots but are suitable for submission to the BAI Sound and Vision scheme.

*We are also open to ideas at 25 minute duration for both pre and post-watershed on RTE2, our preference however is for formats that work at an hour.

On RTÉ ONE, we are looking for programmes that appeal to a broad general audience, that offer emotional engagement as well as practical take-away. We are looking for programmes that are original and innovative and for new presenters/experts who are talented and credible but who also have a sense of humour and fun. The Consumer Show, Supergarden, Operation Transformation, Home of the Year, At Your Service and The Shelbourne have all played in this slot.

For post-watershed on RTÉ ONE, we need great story telling, huge emotional engagement as well as strong presenting talent. These need to be stories of scale, capable of holding an audience for an hour. Our recent post-watershed commissions on RTÉ ONE are Room to Improve and The High Hopes Choir.

On RTÉ2 the mood is lighter and bolder. We need to reflect the preoccupations and obsessions of 18 – 35 year olds. We must attract them to a linear viewing experience as well as satisfying their appetite for social and second screen engagement. We need to entertain and provoke. RTÉ2 successes need to have components that can be seeded virally in advance of viewing and that therefore can find their audience outside traditional TV promotional cycle. Humour is absolutely key to success on RTÉ2. Recent Commissions from Lifestyle for RTÉ2 are: Don’t Tell the Bride, Connected, Norah’s Traveller Academy, Exiles, Camden Chaos, Bressie’s Teenage Kicks and The Verminators.

RTÉ ONE, Mid-week, 20.30

New Consumer Series.

We are currently looking forformats with Consumer interests at their heart. They may be broad-based magazine formats like The Consumer Show or series which deal with one particular area of consumer issues. We are looking for the next generation of consumer programmes: shows that tackle consumer issues in a fresh and engaging way, while remaining informative and fascinating. Food is a huge issue that we haven’t dealt with substantially outside cookery programmes, it matters to every one of our viewers and a new take on this area with great presenters would be particularly welcome. Finance is also an area that hasn’t come under our microscopes for a while, some of us have emerged from a recession and some of us haven’t but we all need to know how to spend our money and how we can access more. While we a have a holiday series in the schedule, we don’t have a consumer treatment of this area and we remain open to stores of rogue builders and traders, or business operators. Eat Well for Less, The Truth About.. Holiday Hit Squad and Supermarket Secrets are clever takes on consumer issues.

In short we are looking for a fresh formats in the consumer field and sparkling talent that can bring consumer issues to life and have longevity in the schedule.

Deadline for submissions is 12.00, Friday July 24th.

We ask, in the first instance, that producers submit ideas into the eCommissioning system:

RTÉ ONE, Sundays 21.30

We are looking for compelling new Factual Formats and Features for Sunday at 21.30. In 2015, Room to Improve delivered consistently high audiences to this slot over 8 weeks. We’re now looking for other meaty Lifestyle formats than have stories to tell and can engage an audience in a really visceral way. Programmes with emotion and heart where, even if the format remains the same, stories will differ vastly from one week to the next.

Casting is obviously crucial in these series and we are likely to give development money in order that the concept can be proven through initial casting.

We are open to really strong formats that involve celebrities like Who Do You Think You Are, but our preference is for really big stories in the lives of ordinary and extraordinary people. Programmes may be presenter driven but real life stars are equally potent. Formats that make good use of fixed rigs and where access is secured or likely to be secured would be of particular interest to us.

Touch stones on other channels are: The Secret Life of Four Year Olds, Undercover Boss, Who Do You Think You Are, The Updateables, One Born Every Minute, Educating ….
