RTÉ Call for Ideas | Young Peoples Programming

Sun 23rd August 2015

RTÉ Young Peoples Programmes is looking for proposals to produce a one-off half hour reality factual programme to mark and celebrate 1916 for children.

See below for details sent through from RTÉ today Monday 24th August.

Deadline for submission of proposals: Wednesday 16th September 2015 at Noon.

Genre: Children’s Reality/Factual

Duration: 1 x half hour plus10 x 2.5 mins

Budget : €50,000

Delivery: February 2016

Target Audience: 7-12's

We are seeking ideas which will follow the challenges and experiences of a group of children as they spend 24 hours in a period house adapted to include conditions, facilities and rituals as would have been experienced by children living in 1916.

Without focusing on the political events of 1916 the intention is that this programme will give viewers aged 7-12 a taste of what life would have been like for children of that time through an immersive experience, a sense of how much life has changed in 100 years.

We would like ideas which offer young viewers an entertaining treatment which explores the difference and comparative comforts enjoyed by children today by challenging them to operate with only the tools and means of the 1916 period.

Historical accuracy is essential to the project and, while education is at the core of this exercise it is important that it is engaging and entertaining and avoids an educational tone.

It is envisaged that the programme would feature six – eight children (aged 9-12) and potentially some adult characters.

Proposals which have worked out the activities, locations and casting process for the immersive experience will be favoured.

Producers should demonstrate their understanding of child protection and health and safety regulations in relation to working with children.

Proposals should consider the target agegroup and tailor the content and activities to appeal to this audience.

Given the target audience’s engagement with content via the internet, proposal should consider how the programme content could be re-purposed to provide 10 x 2.5 minute clips for use online. Proposals need not include the cost of re-editing the content but clearly set out how it would work editorially.

The deadline for delivery of completed programme Friday 26th February 2016.

Submissions should demonstrate the company’s ability to deliver in the following areas:

1. An understanding of RTÉ’s Young Peoples Programmes and its target audience.

2. A demonstrated appreciation and understanding of the brief, as outlined above.

3. The production company illustrates a proven track record in production of programmes for Children/Young People.

4. Ability to engage strong production talent capable of delivering the proposal as required.

5. Is the proposal realisable with reference to budget, time-scale and other key elements?

These criteria are not in any particular order of importance.

Deadline for submission of proposals: Wednesday 16th September 2015 at Noon.

We ask, in the first instance, that producers submit ideas into the eCommissioning system:
